APRIL 10
“For this very night, there stood before me an angel of the God.”
(Acts 17:23)
Tempestuous weather and prolonged darkness, coupled with the imminent risk of shipwreck, had brought the crew of the vessel to despair. Among them, only one man remained perfectly calm, and through his words, the others found reassurance. Paul was the only person brave enough to say, “Sirs, be of good cheer.” Despite the presence of veteran Roman soldiers and experienced sailors, this poor Jewish prisoner exhibited more courage than them all. He had a secret Friend who bolstered his spirits. The Lord Jesus sent a heavenly messenger to whisper words of comfort to His faithful servant, which is why Paul wore a radiant countenance and spoke with confidence.
If we fear the Lord, we can expect timely interventions when our situation seems most desperate. Storms and darkness do not prevent angels from reaching us. Seraphs think it no humiliation to visit even the most humble of God’s family. While encounters with angels may be rare during ordinary times, they become more frequent in our moments of turmoil. Friends may abandon us when we face difficulties, but our connection with the angelic realm will flourish; with strength from love-filled words delivered from the throne through Jacob’s ladder, we will be empowered to act boldly.
Dear reader, if you are facing a time of distress, seek unique help. Jesus is the angel of the covenant, and if you earnestly seek His presence, it will not be withheld. Those who, like Paul, have experienced the angel of God standing by them during a stormy night remember the heartening power that His presence brings, especially when anchors fail, and danger looms nearby.
“O angel of my God, be near,
Amid the darkness, hush my fear;
Loud roars the wild, tempestuous sea,
Thy presence, Lord, shall comfort me.”
