Dangerous to Linger

MAY 12

Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make you into a great nation. I myself will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also bring you up again.”
(Genesis 46:3-4)

Jacob must have felt apprehensive about leaving the land of his ancestors to live among foreign strangers. It was a new and likely challenging situation: who would confidently venture among the citizens of a foreign power without some anxiety? Yet, the way was evidently appointed for him, and so he resolved to go.

This is often the experience of believers; they are called to confront dangers and temptations. In such times, let them follow Jacob’s example by offering prayers to God and seeking His guidance. They should not take a step until they have sought the Lord’s blessing. Then, they will have Jacob’s companion as their friend and helper.

How blessed it is to know that the Lord is with us in all our ways and chooses to be present even in our times of humiliation and struggle! Even during such moments, we can bask in the warmth of our Father’s love. We need not hesitate to go wherever He promises His presence; even the darkest valley becomes bright with this assurance. Marching forward with faith in their God, believers will also receive Jacob’s promise. They will emerge from their troubles, whether in life or in death. Just as Jacob’s descendants eventually came out of Egypt, so too shall all the faithful pass through life’s tribulations and the fear of death unscathed.

Let us take on Jacob’s confidence. “Do not be afraid” is the Lord’s command and a divine encouragement for those who are embarking on new journeys at His bidding; God’s presence and protection eliminate any room for doubt. Without our God, we might fearfully hesitate, but when He calls us forward, it would indeed be dangerous to linger.

Reader, move ahead, and do not be afraid.
